Changing the Game
For Angel Genao and Steven Mateo, baseball has always been more than a sport—it’s been a lifelong passion and a pathway to opportunity.
Both grew up immersed in the game in the Dominican Republic, where baseball isn’t just seasonal—it’s a way of life. Their dedication paid off, leading them to pursue professional careers and eventually crossing paths while playing for the Orem Owlz, a farm club in the Anaheim Angels organization.
After their playing days, their love for the game naturally evolved into a new mission.
“After I stopped playing, I started teaching private lessons,” Steven shared. “I later asked Angel to join me. We bought a small business that included a couple of batting cages, and we taught lessons together.”
What started small quickly grew into something much bigger.
“We’re very unique in what we do,” Angel explained. “We both fell in love with the game in the Dominican Republic. That passion drives us to help others discover that same love for baseball—and to become the best they can be.”
In the Dominican Republic, baseball is a daily commitment. That mindset inspired Angel and Steven to bring something new to Utah: a place where athletes could train year-round, regardless of the season.
As their client base expanded, so did their vision.
“With our private lessons, we kept growing—more students, more demand,” Steven said. “We realized it was time to take the next step.”
That next step was a major one: a 25,000-square-foot indoor training facility featuring batting cages and a full practice field where individual players and entire teams could train.
To bring that vision to life, they partnered with Mountain West Small Business Finance.
“When you’re trying to open something like this, it can get stressful,” Steven said. “But our experience getting the loan was great. We worked hard, had a lot of meetings, and through it all, our Mountain West representative was incredibly helpful—always responsive and pushing things forward.”
In early 2025, their dream became reality.
The new facility opened its doors—and made an immediate impact.
“Coming from the Dominican Republic to now owning one of the biggest and most beautiful facilities in Utah is a dream come true,” Angel said.
Today, 3Ple Play Sports is doing exactly what Angel and Steven set out to accomplish: creating opportunities, building skills, and inspiring the next generation of athletes to fall in love with the game.
