If you find yourself traveling along Main Street in Midway, Utah—an idyllic mountain town known for its Swiss heritage and vibrant community spirit—do yourself a favor and pop into Midway Bakery.

From Insurance to Sourdough: Debbie Small’s Entrepreneurial Journey

In 2018, three sisters—Megan Jacobsen, Devan Jacobsen, and Shannon Edwards—were inspired by their mother’s passion for baking (and her retirement after 20 years as a licensed insurance agent) to create Midway Bakery. Initially, the sisters saw it as a part-time venture for their mom, Debbie Small. However, as demand grew, all four began working full-time at the bakery.

Debbie had not only worked in insurance but also ran multiple businesses, including a scrapbook store and a gift basket company. Yet, her true love remained baking.

The demand for her now-famous cinnamon rolls, breads, pastries, and sweet and savory treats soared. The bakery’s popularity grew even during the pandemic, but when their lease was not renewed, the team got creative. They operated out of various kitchens and launched a food truck in March 2022.

Finding a New Home for Midway Bakery

Throughout this time, the team remained committed to finding a permanent home for Midway Bakery.

In April 2023, they joyfully announced on Instagram that they had secured a new location in Midway:

“We can’t wait for the day when we will be able to welcome you back into our little bakery. Thanks, friends, for always being there for us.”

Sadly, just over a year later, in July 2024, Debbie passed away from cancer. Her passing left a significant void in the family, and they had to make some difficult decisions.

“Our sweet mom’s passing has left a deep wound in our hearts that we continue to work through every day,” the family shared on Instagram. “After a lot of prayer, we have decided to continue with Midway Bakery. We love it dearly. It holds a special place in our hearts, just as it did in hers. We are finally home. We signed the papers, and the building officially became ours yesterday.”

To assist with the purchase and renovation of the new bakery location, the family secured an SBA 504 loan
from Mountain West Small Business Finance.

Curtis Singleton, MWSBF Vice President and the loan officer who helped package the loan, shared:

“So often in our line of work, we get caught up in the numbers and the checklists of getting a loan done. Midway Bakery was a special deal for our company. We love helping small business owners realize their dreams. Seeing how many different ways the community has shown up to help support this family and being able to help the Small Family honor Debbie’s legacy with the bakery has been especially memorable.”

Midway Bakery, now owned by a family trust that includes their dad, Ed Small, officially opened its new doors on November 21, 2024—just in time for Thanksgiving.
