Ice Cream of the Crop

Long before “Buy Local” was a movement or trending on Twitter®, Casper’s Ice Cream was sourcing goods about local as one could get. In 1925, Casper Merrill took the milk and cream from the family’s dairy cows and created the “original” Ice Cream Nut Sundae on a Stick in a tengallon milk can and sold them at the local Independence Day celebration. For Everything, There is a First Time

A recurring theme among Trekkies in later years, mostly as the later Original Series Movies came out, was – “How long can these old guys go?” At some point, Captain Kirk wasn’t able to run around, dive and roll on the ground, (more…)

Employee Spotlight: Kim Harper

This week we caught up with Kim Harper, V.P., Servicing Department Manager over here at Mountain West. Kim’s been with Mountain west for over 20 years, and she was recently promoted to head up the Servicing Department, where Mountain West manages our vast loan portfolio. Kim’s been a key asset to Mountain West, and we appreciate the decades of experience that she brings to her new role.

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant?

Kim: I must admit, I love all foods unless it’s fish (or anything that swims, walks, crawls in or is grown in the sea!) I’d have to say I probably don’t have a favorite restaurant, but I love all Mexican food. A good Mexican restaurant would be my go to any day.

Q: What is something that you do for Mountain West that most people wouldn’t know about?

Kim: Mountain West has always been about giving back to the community. So they have graciously allowed me the time to serve on the Board of the Women’s Business Center, a division of the Salt Lake Chamber.

Q: What is your favorite memory from your time at Mountain West?

Kim: Mountain West has provided so many memories over the years that it really gets hard to pick just one. I’d have to say that my favorite memory is of the friends and co-workers I’ve had the opportunity to work with over the years.

Q: What would you say to your 10 year-old self if you could go back in time?

Kim: Listen to your parents! They really do know more than you do.

Q: What is the best book you’ve ever read? What made it so great?

Kim: I’d have to say my favorite book was The Book Thief. I can be, but most of the time I am not a very emotional person. I really loved that this book was not only a great read, but I also really enjoyed that it could evoke such a strong emotion out of me.

Q: What three songs have you been listening to the most lately? Why?

Kim: Hmmm, that’s a tough one! I just saw Les Miz again, and I guess you could say it’s been playing in my head the last week, over and over again. I love it because it has such a great message.

Q: Tell us something that might surprise us about you.

Kim: Probably the biggest thing that surprises people, and I would think it would be a dead giveaway, but I’m an introvert. I’ve always been on the shyer side. (I just pretend the rest of the time, fake it till you make it right??)

Danny Mangum: Loan Officer, Father, Gossip Magazine Guru

This week we caught up with Danny Mangum, V.P., Loan Officer over here at Mountain West. Danny’s been with us for the last six years, and has been involved with loan origination that whole time.

Q: What are three words to describe what you do for Mountain West?

Danny: Loans, Loans & Comedy

Q: What’s your favorite restaurant?

Danny: Settebello

Q: What has been your favorite project/event at Mountain West?

Danny: Casper’s Ice Cream (Fat Boy), it has been so cool to see a rural manufacturer grow to a point where we are now working on their 3rd and 4th loans. The amazing thing about Casper’s is that their success has in part lead to the success of Richmond, Utah and parts of Southern Idaho as they employ the locals and buy goods from local farmers to support their ice cream production.

Q: If you were to write a self-help book, what would the title be?

Danny: Just Wing It a self – help guide to parenting and life.

Q: What would you like to be famous for?

Danny: There is still a part of me that thinks that one day a Major league Baseball scout is going to randomly be walking by the rec softball fields and will see my talent and give me a shot at The Bigs.

Q: What was the last movie that you saw?

Danny: Suicide Squad

Q: Tell us something that might surprise us about you.

Danny: I read celebrity gossip magazines when I travel.

Don’t Tell Arby’s But We Have The Meats

img_0309Not everyone was invited to Mountain West’s “slumber party” on the Thursday night prior to the BYU-Utah showdown on Saturday. “Human Resource” concerns aside, there was not much sleeping that took place on the eve before the annual MWSBF tailgate. Loan Officers were joined by Manuel Bueno, Vice President Meadows Bank to do a significant amount of smoking – of meat, naturally. (more…)
